Course Syllabus
Course Description: Woodworking deals with review and use of basic hand tools, study of woods and finishes, and details planning of projects. A portion of the time is spent on introductions to power tools. Students are assigned one (1) special project involving the use of power tools and hand tools. Cost of take-home projects will be assessed to the student. A study of the woods/cellulose industry, the construction of buildings and the production of articles made from woods and cellulose products. Learning experiences include experimenting, designing, constructing, operating, and evaluating industrial tools, processes, forest products, related synthetic materials, cabinetmaking, woods machining, and finishing.
Instructional Philosophy and Instructional Delivery Plan: Students will be expected to meet all course goals and demonstrate a competency with a minimum of 65% accuracy. The course work will be mainly laboratory based. The Students will learn the How, What, Why, and When of selecting appropriate materials whether they are fine hardwoods or hobby woodworkers, manufactured panel products, plastics, glass or ceramics. Hardware, abrasives, adhesives, and finishing supplies will be discussed in appropriate detail. Students will be provided with complete coverage of processes and techniques using both hand and power tools and machines.
Student assessment will be based on how their decisions will affect the final project. Whether the student is a home, in industry or in a school, the students activities will be focused on their own safety, safety of co-workers and the effects of the process on the environment. The students will understand how available hand, portable and stationary tools and machines will influence the factors in their decisions of the projects. The students will practice their techniques and they will increase their woodworking and cabinetmaking skills.
Course Goals:

10. Demonstrate the correct methods of finish application.

Major Course Projects:
Research and analyze a career of their choice in the woodworking and cabinetmaking. The students will write and present a two-page paper.
The students will build a project using the class goals as a set standard. The students will present and showcase the projects to the student body to demonstrate student knowledge and talent as well as to generate interest to the class and field.
Performance Standards:
The Brandon Valley School grading scale will be used.
Percentages will be determined in the following manner:
60% projects/lab grade (Projects that are not finished will be graded as a zero) (rubrics system of grading will be used.)
30% test of your grade (5 points each)
10% daily of your grade (2 points each)
Late Work will be accepted.
1st day late 20% of grade
2nd day late 50% of grade
3rd day late 0%
Extra credit opportunities will be made available to the students.
General shop safety will be discussed in class
